As a lover of shoes, I can’t imagine going through life without them. They’re
not just about protecting the feet. They bring me joy and happy memories too.
Sadly, about 300 million children around the world have never owned a pair of shoes. These kids are at risk of getting serious parasitic diseases like hookworm and threadworm, not to mention cuts, burns and infections. As well, shoes are often considered a required part of the school uniform in some countries. Without shoes, many children can’t attend school.
I am privileged to own many pairs of shoes, most of them having been purchased second-hand and lovingly brought back to life.
This blog is a fun way for me to show off some of my footwear and share with you the stories that go along with them. Each day for a month I’ll post a photo of a pair of my shoes or boots and a memory I have about them. I invite you to send me photos and stories about your own footwear and I will post as many of them as I can on the “Your Shoes, Your Stories” section of this blog. Please send your pictures and shoe memories to thesoleproject@hotmail.com.
While this could be seen as frivolous, there is a very serious purpose behind it all. Please remember the world’s many barefooted children and donate what you can to provide shoes for them.
